Maui is a sort of magical place every day, but this Christmas Day morning was especially amazing for my shoot with Pooja & Vishal who were visiting the island for the first time on a little getaway before the arrival of their little one. We had amazingly vibrant rainbows almost the entire time that we strolled along Baldwin Beach and finally—of course—Baby Beach.
There’s a bit of magic that seems to swirl around most wedding days.
Inevitably, something will go wrong. Like they ship you the wrong dress and you end up shopping for your gown the day before the wedding. But that’s when the magic happens, like Erin finding this darling, off-the-rack, tea-length number that could not have been any cuter or fit her any more perfectly.
And planning a pop-up style wedding in January is a real gamble in Seattle, but these two ended up with the most gorgeous, sunny day to tie the knot at the Kimpton Alexis Hotel downtown. With just a couple of weeks notice, Erin and Matt managed to bring together their family and friends for a gorgeous afternoon affair with the sweetest staircase ceremony and plenty of celebratory champagne!
I’ve never shot a more Seattle wedding: Rashaun and Dampier rode a King County Metro bus and then the Sound Transit Link light rail to arrive at their New Year’s Eve wedding celebration at Sole Repair Shop on Capitol Hill. And of course we had to stop for a photo at the landmark Dick’s Drive-In, where these two amazing people first met.
About halfway through the evening, the bride surprised her groom by having two golden dancers join the party and deliver Dick’s burgers to the crowd—the start of “la hora loca” in honor of the groom’s Peruvian culture and the Latin American tradition amping up the celebration with masks, party favors and more. The magical evening continued with a midnight balloon drop, sparklers in the street and finally a rare Seattle snowfall that we captured as the bride and groom kissed in the middle of one of Capitol Hill’s rainbow crosswalks.
